Grow Sheffield
In June 2007 I initiated a series of events in Sheffield celebrating urban food growing with a particular emphasis on the role of culture and creativity. This included devising and running:
An open space event at the Showroom Cinema with international film screenings about urban good possibilities (including the Abundance film) for a capacity audience of 60
Allotment Soup – promenade cross-artform event on allotment sites
Reclaim the Soil – replanting neglected green spaces and planters in the city using permaculture techniques
Renga Ramble – participatory poetry on green spaces and growing in the city and Abundance – a city wide community harvest re-distributing free local fruit to hundreds of people
This series of events led to a huge enthusiasm for the project, locally and nationally and Grow Sheffield continued to develop social networking events, visits to other projects, training in horticultural skills, chutney making and extensive promotion and lobbying to raise awareness of the importance of urban agriculture in creating a sustainable city and in reducing our carbon and ecological footprint. Grow Sheffield acknowledges that a healthy society has a sustainable culture, a good relationship with place/land and a rich cultural/festive life. Grow Sheffield works towards achieving these aims in an integrated way. Grow Sheffield works in partnership with a number of organisations in the arts and environment sectors. Grow Sheffield is now a constituted voluntary group which has been invited to share ideas and give talks across the country. Grow Sheffield’s website has lots of information about events and activities past and present.
